There are vast oppurtunities for greenhouse gas emissions reduction in agriculture and forestry.  Under the Australian Government’s proposed Carbon Farming Initiative, carbon credits will be able to be generated from, amongst other activities:

•  Reforestation and revegetation;
•  Reduced methane emissions from livestock;
•  Reduced fertiliser emissions;
•  Manure management;
•  Reduced emissions or increased sequestration in agricultural soils (soil carbon);
•  Savannah fire management;
•  Avoided deforestation;
•  Burning of stubble/crop residue;
•  Reduced emissions from rice cultivation; and
•  Reduced emissions from landfill waste.

The demand for carbon credits to offset the emissions of business and individuals has grown rapidly in recent years and the introduction of domestic or international climate change legislation will see further increases in the demand for accredited offsets.  Australian agriculture is in an ideal position to deliver these offsets whilst also creating lasting and sustainable benefits for farmers.
