We passionately believe that carbon offsets should not just be about carbon. Our innovative work in this area strives to ensure that all projects are socially and ecologically sustainable and can create lasting benefits for all stakeholders.
Offset Brokerage
Carbon House is able to facilitate the procurement, delivery and retirement of carbon offsets on behalf of organisations wishing to reduce or neutralise their reported carbon footprint. We can broker NCOS compliant offsets accredited under standards such as the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), Gold Standard and Social Carbon Standard, from a wide range of project types and locations.
Carbon Offset Strategy
Any organisation involved in the purchase of offsets either voluntarily or for compliance can benefit from taking a strategic approach. This is particularly relevant considering the planned introduction of a carbon price in Australia. Carbon House specialises in developing holistic carbon offset strategies for organisations that seek to minimise cost and risk and also maximise opportunities for co-benefits and engagement.
Project Development
Carbon House is actively involved in the development of carbon offset projects throughout Australia and the world. We specialise in working with clients to develop projects and offset solutions specific to their needs. Our projects also focus strongly on maximising co-benefits for the client and the local community. Within Australia, this means developing packages of offset activities within distinct ‘sites’. We call this approach ‘Integrated Landscape Carbon’ and are passionate about its ability to maximise benefits to the local community whilst also representing a strong ‘story’ behind each offset. Internationally, we are actively involved in the development of carbon offset projects throughout the world under a variety of standards such as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Verified Carbon Standard (VCS).
Carbon Opportunities Assessment
Significant opportunities exist in the emerging carbon market for rural and Indigenous landowners. Similarly, numerous corporations have land holdings which may be suitable for the development of carbon offset projects alongside their operations. The Federal Government’s Carbon Farming Initiative is specifically designed for landowners to be able to take advantage of these opportunities to diversify income whilst creating environmental and social benefits. Carbon House works with all landowners to determine what the carbon opportunities are for their property. This foremost involves assessing the natural assets available on the site to determine the type and scale of offset projects that may be viable. This is followed by a detailed assessment and expected carbon yield of each project type and a full financial analysis.
Indigenous Carbon
Indigenous land managers have a key role to play in the global effort to combat climate change. Carbon House has built relationships with Indigenous communities across Australia and abroad. It is our view that this alliance of empowered communities has a greater ability to generate benefits from climate change action together than they do as individuals. We seek to provide Indigenous landholders with opportunities to participate in the carbon economy and see a key prospect in matching large emitters with landholders to develop projects that provide mutual social, cultural, economic and environmental outcomes. Carbon House works with all parties to carefully assess viability and build joint ventures that fairly distribute risk and reward.
Blue Carbon
We believe that not all carbon is created equal. This refers to the quality and co-benefits of carbon offset projects and the level to which they contribute to sustainable development. As such, we are passionate about the advancement and development of ‘blue carbon’ projects. These are projects that take place in aquatic ecosystems and include activities such as mangrove revegetation, establishment of seagrass plantations and the restoration of degraded wetlands. These projects have significant ecological and cultural benefits as well as being highly effective methods of carbon sequestration.
Environmental Offsets
An environmental offset works by ensuring the conservation of a similar area of natural landscape in order to balance the effects of clearing and development elsewhere. We are able to utilise our relationships with an expansive network of rural and indigenous landowners in order to facilitate the development and brokerage of environmental offsets across Australia.
Methodology Development
Carbon House maintains close professional relationships with researchers and academics from the University of Queensland and other leading Australian universities. As such, we are at the forefront of advances in the carbon sequestration field and are actively engaged in the development of innovative new methodologies for carbon offset projects under a range of national and international standards.
